OA HURRICANE

It just wouldn't be Mardi Gras without a few good tunes and a fun, festive drink (or three). And no cocktail sings like New Orleans quite like the Hurricane. As the legend goes, back in the 1940s, bar owner Pat O'Brien invented the sweet-and-sour concoction when he was forced to buy a surplus of rum in order to also purchase whiskey and scotch, which were in short-supply during WWII. To move the rum, he experimented by mixing it with different ingredients until he paired it with passionfruit and lemon juices. He served the brew up in a tall, curvy glass that looked like a hurricane lamp and handed it out to sailors. It was a hit and ever since, the Hurricane Drink has been a French Quarter staple and go-to cocktail for Mardi Gras celebrations everywhere.

Today, the Hurricane is known as much for its unmistakable appearance as it is for its taste -- that vibrant, reddish hue, garnished with orange slices and cherries, looks like a party in a glass. The color comes from the blending of fruit juices and grenadine, a simple syrup made from pomegranates. But Organic Avenue has created its own version, which gets an extra blush from our Inspiration Juice! Packed with pineapple, kiwi, and apple, Inspiration puts a unique spin on the classic Hurricane which, while perfect for Mardi Gras, would also be a fitting cocktail to whip up for any warm weather soiree. Spring is just around the corner, after all!
