FLAX ATTACK

Flaxseeds are tiny little grains with big health benefits. They are cultivated from the flax plant, which is also used in the creation of linen, and dates all the way back to ancient Egypt (making it one of the oldest fiber crops in existence). The seeds of the flax plant are considered a superfood and are a formidable source of fiber, vitamin B1, and Omega-3 fatty acids. Additionally, flaxseeds are one of the highest sources of lignans, plant-based compounds which help reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease. To get in your daily dose, you can sprinkle them onto your morning cereal or oatmeal, salad, or soup, blend them into a smoothie, or bake them into breads and pastries.

It was the flaxseed that helped launch health food company Foods Alive. Founders Ellen and Michael Moor were introduced to flaxseed crackers at a raw food buffet and loved them so much that Ellen tried to recreate them in the couple's home kitchen. After she mastered the basic cracker, she began experimenting with different flavors and when they became a family favorite, the Moors brought them to market in 2002 under the Foods Alive label. Today, Ellen's original flavors still remain on the menu and range from sweet (Maple Cinnamon, Ginger Snap) to savory (Italian Zest, Rosemary Hemp). They're perfect to munch by themselves or coupled with spreads and dips -- just imagine Superbowl Sunday with a basket of Mexican Harvest crackers and a bowl of fresh guacamole!
